ABOUT THE HORATIO ALGER ASSOCIATION

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans is dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles. The Association honors the achievements of outstanding leaders who have accomplished remarkable successes in spite of adversity by bestowing upon them the Horatio Alger Award and inducting them as lifetime Members. Since 1947, more than 700 distinguished individuals from all walks of life and diverse professional backgrounds have received the Horatio Alger Award and lifetime membership in the Association. There are currently more than 300 living Members, including ten Members from Canada.

Horatio Alger Members support promising young people with the resources and confidence needed to overcome adversity and pursue their dreams through higher education. Thanks to their generosity, in 2019 the Association awarded more than $21 million in undergraduate and graduate need-based scholarships across the United States and Canada and provides college support services to its Scholars. Since 1984, the Association has awarded more than $180 million in college scholarships to more than 25,000 deserving young people.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

The Horatio Alger Association is looking for (2) Fall Assistant to support its Fall 2023 College Success Program! The purpose of the College Success Program is to support over 600 incoming US Horatio Alger Scholars throughout the college application process and prepare them for their first year of college. The fall, virtual program will run from August through December.

CORE FUNCTION:

The Association is looking for this role to provide logistic and technical support, as well as facilitation capacity to support high school seniors across the U.S. The Fall internship will take place approximately from July 31st-  December 15th, and will be approximately 45 hours per month. The hours worked per week will vary throughout the month depending on the program schedule. Flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours is a must. The Fall Assistant will be compensated at $15/hour.

Scholar Service Coordinator

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and administer programs, services and activities related to assigned live virtual sessions per month (1.5 hours per session) starting in August. 
  • Provide support during live virtual sessions by facilitating breakout rooms and ice breakers, troubleshooting technical challenges for scholars, and other duties as assigned by the Coordinator. 
  • Manage the College Success email, communicate with scholars regarding program requirements and attendance, and provide support for scholars who need to reschedule their sessions 
  • Check and deliver feedback on student’s College Success Program assignments 
  • Develop materials for the College Success Program, including ice breaker activities and makeup assignments.
  • Support programmatic priorities, as designated by the Scholar Services Coordinators. 
  • Additional duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be a 2020, 2021, or 2022 U.S. Horatio Alger Scholar in good standing with the Association. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (with an Excel emphasis).
  • Zoom proficiency: setting up meetings, managing breakout rooms, etc. 
  • Must be available to work 45 hours per month (the hours per week will vary depending on the program schedule).
  • Must be available to work some weekends and late evenings, depending on the time zone of the applicant.
  • Attend mandatory orientation during the week of July 24 – 28th.
  • Availability (approximately) from July 31st  – December 15th. 
  • Must have access to consistent internet and technology device. 
  • Strong time management skills & an ability to effectively manage multiple tasks/projects. 
  • A flexible team player with attention to detail is a must.
